St Saviour's CEVC Nursery & Infant School in Larkhall, Bath recently secured a grant of £10,000 from the Bath & West Community Energy (BWCE) Fund, which will cover 50% of the cost of installing solar panels on the school roof. The grant is the highest amount awarded under the fund which is administered by the Quartet Foundation.
The school, which is part of the nationwide Solar Schools scheme run by the organisation 10:10, is now more than half-way towards funding a 10 kilowatt array, which it plans to install in the autumn. The panels will generate a quarter of the school's electricity during term-time, saving money on bills as well as providing income during the school holidays.
Ed Harker, headteacher, commented: "We're delighted to have been selected by BWCE for their major grant award. It has given a tremendous boost to our fundraising efforts and we are even more determined to reach our goal of £20,000 by July this year. It's a great chance to bring the school and local community together for a great cause, to help the environment and spread the word about renewable energy."
The BWCE grant is conditional upon match-funding (matching the amount from other sources). The Solar at St Saviour's Infants (SASSI) team is working hard with class fundraising activities and sales of its own merchandise, as well as approaching local businesses for sponsorship and organising events, including an Auction of Promises to be held on Friday 18th March (7.30 for 8 to 10 pm, FREE entry and open to all, great lots, cash bar & snacks, entertainment).
